Dozen killed in Egypt due to rockfall

At least 31 people were killed in Ezbet Bekhit when the huge boulders tumbled from a cliff on the eastern edge of Cairo, crushing 50 homes in a slum area, Heba Saleh.
The rocks fell off the Muqattam hills in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Many residents  are missing and are believed to have been interred under the rockfall and the junk of their homes.

Rescue efforts were hampered by the narrowness of the streets, which impeded access for the heavy earth-moving equipment required. Local people complained that it took the emergency services several hours to arrive.

The rockfall joins a long list of disasters in Egypt in recent years which, critics say, have highlighted the inadequacy of the authorities' response to emergencies as well as a general obliviousness to safety standards in government and society.
