Dabur Nepal, Narayani Rolling Mills, Birgunj Food Industry,Triveni Impex and Pashupati Industries are the five big industries lying closed since three months due to labour dispute, industrial insecurity and lack of government support.
According to the Bara Chambers of Commerce and Industries (BCCI), the
multinational company J Sons Pvt Ltd was run with the objective of
preparing raw materials and exporting these to other countries.
However, now the company is preparing to shift to India due to a land
dispute. Ironically, barely two weeks ago the government promised the
BCCI to provide a conducive environment for industries. Irked that the
government has not bothered to get closed industries to resume
functioning, industrialists are seeking safer options and locations for
their investment. BCCI president Shivanath Sharma accused the
government of not taking initiatives to get the closed industries to
resume functioning though Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal
'Prachanda', Home Minister Bamdev Gautam and Labour Minister Lekh Raj
Bhatta promised industrialists just a week ago in Kathmandu to provide
a secure business environment within seven days. BCCI president
Sharma said discussion on other points could be started if the workers
agreed to the 'no work no pay' condition. Dabur Nepal is on the verge
of displacing after the workers demanded 10 per cent bonus. It has been
exporting multi-product items like juice, candy, toothpaste and
cosmetic items to Bangaladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Germany and other
European countries. According to the company, it is facing a loss of Rs
2 million a day due to the closure. Nearly 35,000 households are being
sustained by the industries in Pathlaiya-Birgunj corridors, according
to BCCI statistics. Fuming at the government for not keeping its
promise, BCCI president Sharma said, "We will soon hand over the keys
of the industrial plants to the Home and Labour ministers and declare
our programmes of agitation." At least, 250 small and big industries
are based in the Pathlaiya-Birgunj corridor. Meanwhile, agitating
workers of Dabur Nepal said they were ready to abide by the decision
made by the high-level committee formed by the government. "We have
been coming to the factory for eight hours a day and will join work if
the management reopens it," Dabur Nepal Workers' Union president
Shivalal Chhetry said.
